DEN DC Pitch Competition 2017

Get ready for an exciting night of pitches from early-stage companies and non-profits!

General information:

Time: Tuesday, Dec 5, doors open at 6 pm, pitching goes 6:15-7:30 pm, winner announced by 8 pm.

Location: Conference space, Washington DC Economic Partnership, 1495 F St NW, Washington DC 20004 . Closest to the McPherson Sq and Metro Center metro stops.

At DEN DC’s pitch competition, early-stage ventures have the opportunity to present a 5 minute pitch before the Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network, and receive questions and feedback from a panel of expert judges. And, the winner receives $500 plus a 6 month DEN DC membership and advice!

Pitch starts the annual DEN competition cycle, followed by the Business Plan competition in the spring, and then the national finals in Hanover in May, including eligibility for $50k in prizes then. 

DEN DC pitch & business plan winners regularly rank as finalists in Hanover. DEN DC competition winners include http://thresher.io , https://www.marinerexchange.com , and https://freyformen.com .

If you have a new company, B-corp, or non-profit, or would like to fine-tune an idea, (or if you know someone who does), this is the time to pitch!

If you are interested in pitching...

Eligibility for pitching:

  • Past contestants must present a new and different venture in order to compete.

  • Contestants should not have raised funding in excess of $250k and their ventures should have annual revenues that do not exceed $250k.

  • If incorporated, the venture should not be more than 3 years old as of May 2018.

  • While we encourage all contestants to join DEN DC, you do not already need to be a DEN DC member in order to pitch.

  • Companies, B corps, and non-profits are all eligible to participate.

  • Submissions may be entered as individuals or teams.

  • The maximum number of team members for a single pitch is limited to 3 persons.

  • Each individual or team pitching may enter one idea or concept.

  • Only the pitching individual or the pitching members of a team may pitch to the panel of judges or answer questions from the judges and/or audience.

  • The pitched idea or concept must be the original work of the individual or team pitching it.

  • Ideas and concepts deemed by DEN DC to be fake, insincere, offensive, immoral, or unethical may be screened and disqualified.

  • Each entrant will be allotted 5 minutes to present with additional time allotted for 2-3 minutes of questions from judges. The audience will not be allowed to pose questions.

  • Confidentiality is not guaranteed in any way. Do not include confidential material in your submissions. There is no way for DEN DC to enforce a prohibition of other competitors, audience members, or judges who see and hear a pitch competitor’s materials from sharing the idea and/or materials.

  • Teams do not need to be Dartmouth affiliated in any way to participate in the fall pitch competition.

Winner receives:

  • $500 prize

  • 6 month free DEN DC membership for their team

  • Supportive advice through DEN over the next six months

  • Automatic entry to the DEN DC Spring Business Plan Competition. (Note, teams without a Dartmouth affiliation on founding team cannot win the spring business plan competition, as the winner is sent on to the Dartmouth campus competition. But, they will still have the highly valuable experience of presenting an extended business plan and receiving feedback).

Judging Criteria:

  • Product/Service - Description of the product or service and its associated value proposition – How is the product or service going to add value for customers?

  • Target Market – Who will be buying the product or service? How big is the target market?

  • Differentiation – How is the product or service different from existing competition? What is the sustainable competitive advantage? (Patent, algorithm, unique service model, etc.)

  • Revenue Model – How will the product or service generate revenue? (Sales, subscription, advertisement, etc.) How much do you expect to sell in the first year of business?

  • Priorities - What’s your top priority in the next six months? What metric are you watching the most closely? What is your biggest barrier (other than funding)?

  • Team - Why is your team the team to bring this to market?

To apply to pitch, complete the form with the below information by November 15th 2017:

  • Name of venture

  •  Estimated revenue for 2017

  •  If incorporated, date of incorporation; otherwise date of first funding from any source.

  •  Names of presenting team members, and any Dartmouth affiliations on the founding team.

  • A brief one paragraph, 5 sentence maximum, description of your venture.
