2014 Annual New Venture Contest

The Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network of DC (DEN DC) announces its 2014 Annual New Venture Contest, to be held on Tuesday, February 25, 2014. 

The winner of the DEN DC 2014 Annual New Venture Contest will receive $1,000 in cash and represent the DEN DC at the Dartmouth Ventures 2014 (DV14) Entrepreneurship Contest in Hanover, NH on April 4 and 5, 2014.

The DV14 Entrepreneurship Contest offers more than $70,000 in prizes.

Eligibility: The DEN DC 2014 Annual New Venture Contest is open to any startup team or company having one or more

Dartmouth alumni (Tuck, Thayer, Geisel or the College) as a principal.  Participating teams must also have one or more members in good standing of DEN DC .  Past contest winners are not eligible to participate. In order to qualify, startups must not:
  • Have received funding in excess of $100,000,
  • Have annual revenue in excess of $100,000,
  • Be more than 3 years old (i.e., incorporated no earlier than February 15, 2011).

Minimum Submission to Participate:  All prospective participants must submit the following:

  1. An Entry Form stating the business name, the team members names and roles, contact information and the relevant Dartmouth affiliation,
  2. A one-page Executive Summary,
  3. and A PowerPoint deck (10 slides or less, excluding cover and appendix). It is recommended that presentations cover market, value proposition and product, competition, financials (financing needs, projections), timeline and team.

Early Review Option: Prospective participants who submit an early draft of their materials by Friday, January 19, 2014, will receive feedback from the DEN DC by Friday, January 31, 2014.  A detailed calendar of events and deadlines for the DEN DC 2014 Annual Business Plan Competition is available here.

Selection Criteria:  Submissions will be evaluated on the basis of how likely the business is to create significant economic value through an exit (merger, acquisition or IPO).  Criteria include a:

  • Large, growing market,
  • Solid product or service,
  • Sustainable business model,
  • Realistic deal.

Judging Panel: Our panel of judges is still to be determined.

Prizes: The winner of the DEN DC 2014 Annual New Venture Contest will receive $1,000 in cash and an automatic berth in the Dartmouth Ventures 2014 Entrepreneurship Contest in Hanover, NH on Friday, April 4 and Saturday, April 5, 2014. 

The winner will also participate in the DEN DC Guppy Tank (see below) on Tuesday, March 4, 2014. 

About the DEN DC Guppy Tank:  The DEN DC Guppy Tank is an intense review and advising session for a single startup.  In the Guppy Tank, DEN DC members apply their considerable expertise to the task of improving a startup and its pitch.  This DEN DC Guppy Tank event will help make the winning

DEN DCstartup more competitive in the DV14 Entrepreneurship Contest in Hanover.

About The Dartmouth Ventures 2014 Entrepreneurship Contest in Hanover:  The Dartmouth Entrepreneurial Network is co-hosting an entrepreneurship conference on April 5, 2014 with the Tuck School called Dartmouth Ventures 2014 (DV2014): A Conference on Entrepreneurship.  Please go to http://www.dartmouthventures.org for more information about DV2014.

The DV2014 conference includes a showcase for startups as well as the Dartmouth Ventures Entrepreneurship Contest (on April 4 and 5, 2014) with over $65K in prizes. Business plan submissions for DV2014 from regional DEN winners are due to the DV2014 coordinator by March 14, 2014.

The team that wins the DEN DC 2014 Annual Business Plan Competition (as well as the teams that win similar local DEN competitions in other cities) receives an automatic invitation to the DV2014 Conference and is entered in the quarterfinals of the Dartmouth Ventures Entrepreneurship Contest. Three places in the DV2014 semifinals will be assigned and guaranteed to the top DEN City entrants.
